I can't comment on Macs, but I'm deliriously happy with the Opera
browser (opera.com).  It runs on Windows and linux and is TONS faster
than the `standard' browsers.   It's not perfect, but I am not looking
for 110% Explorer compatibility.

If you *are* looking for that, download Slimbrowser (flashpeak.com). 
It's free and rides on top of IE without all the bloat.  It's Windows
only though.

The newer Mozilla also gets decent marks (at least on linux).
