Before stripping the cabinet, if you have access to a
paint gun, you will want to get the color "computer"
matched at a good paint store. I use Sherwin-Williams
for the matching and use their acryllic paint in the
"satin" finish for repainting radios. This runs about
$11 a quart which is plenty to do several cabinets.
Some stores also have the ability to "load" spray
paint cans although this definitely adds to the cost.
So far, every paint that I have had matched by
Sherwin-Williams has been "right on".
For the crackle I use Rust-Oleum American Accents
Stone Creations. The gray color seems to do the best
finish. You need to practice a little bit but then
you can get a good medium crackle finish. You then
overspray with the correct color. Of course you need
to prime the cabinet after removing the old paint.
For removing the old paint I use the "normal" jelly
type of paint remover that runs about $7 for a quart.
After the paint is removed, you do need to wash down
the cabinet with a hose and then sand off any small
bits of paint that might remain.
I understand that Rust-Oleum has come out with a
wrinkle type of paint. However, I have not tried any
of that particular brand so I cannot comment on how
well it works. As for those brands that you get at
the automobile parts houses, I have not had good luck
with any of them. No matter what I try, including
following the directions closely, sometimes it works,
sometimes it works on part of the project, and
sometimes it doesn't work at all. I have even painted
several small parts at the same time. A couple come
out fine, a couple "so-so" and the rest are garbage!
There is no reason at all for that!
Back in the 1970s there were some excellent spray cans
of wrinkle paint. But, over the years the EPA has
banned some of the chemicals that were used in those
cans and the newer paints just don't seem to work any
where near as well.

crackle paint job?
