The best kept secret for cleaning brass, nickel plated brass, cadmium plated
steel, copper and other metals is a solution of sodium bisulfate in water
followed by washing with a small brush (old toothbrush works well) with a 50-50
mix of ammonia and 409 then rinsed and dried. Sodium bisulfate is sold as pH
down in the swimming pool section of any store that handles pool supplies. It
comes in a pint size plastic bottle for $2 or $3 and a tablespoon of the granules
mixed in a cup of warm water is enough to really get the job done. Parts can
be immersed for a couple of minutes and are then ready for the follow up
steps. Wear rubber gloves and be careful with steel as it will react (you will see
bubbles if it is reacting) if you leave it in too long but it will be OK for a
couple of minutes. Every restorer of old radio parts should know about this
stuff. It really brightens up the old dull metals and plating.
