There are some really sharp computer wizards on this list. They know the answer
to your question almost always, and are also correct. Advice is always

Thanks to the help of a bunch of you, the address book (and email and most 
settings) was all 
recovered after the OS reinstallation.  With just a little luck, I may 
actually get to play radios instead of computers tomorrow.  :-)
