I went so far as to attend an orientation session for applicants, and
began to fill out the 36 page application package (I think that's the
number of pages; it was very large.) They were looking for radio operators
for remote island locations, and told us that we would be at least a few
weeks between any face-to-face contacts with other humans, so we should be
healthy and well-adjusted. I didn't turn the application in, though. In my
case, it was probably in 1982 or 1983, and I was about 25 years old.
