It is whatever the blue film is that is the "blue" of the Marlin, or Gillette,
Blue Blade that reacts with the Graphite in the pencial lead, and the baser
metal, to cause the rectification. The question is, what is that blue film?

Likely, a point contact diode was formed at the interface between the pencil
lead
and oxide film. Likely a hacksaw blade or clock spring would work as well.
