That's right Jerry....and I don't know of any 'SX' series receivers that
would warble either.
Perhaps if you hit it with a hammer to try to get it to stop drifting,
but warble....naaaaa.

Did I just miss it, or did no one mention the R-390A, and particularly
the
Non-A? Or the SP-600JX series? Of course, those are in a different
league
altogether - both technically and price wise - from most of those
mentioned,
but ought to be at least considered if one is really serious about AM
reception. The only thing that's going to happen to my JX-17 if you
"bump"
it is you will have to go bandage your hand. But warble? Ha! In this
case
size does make a difference, as does that added 50 pounds and $200-$300.

Tnx to all for the many replies (18 so far) .

Nationals (HRO's ,183Ds, 300's & 303's) & Collins (A-2's & A-3's) seem
to be
the favorites of the group. However the HRO's plug-in coils seem to be a
bigger hassle than I imagined.

Hammarlunds & Hallicrafters seem to be disfavored ("The HQ series and SX
series tend to warble when bumped, especially on the upper bands. The HQ
series have mica caps built in the bottom of the coils and they were
notorious to fail" "Selectivity too tight for melodious AM tones....")
Drakes were rated good but don't "look the part" & "AM filter is too
tight".

That leaves the Collins 75A-2 & 75A-3 & the National 183D, NC 300 &
NC303 &
possibly the Racal 17.

Anyone who has any of these units for sale, in good shape, please
comtact
me.

Tnx & 73

Terry
