Take a look at OZ Polish. An Internet search should turn up a description and
a supplier source. It goes on as a liquid (no silicones) but dries to the
touch. It nourishes the original paint, brings the color back and leaves behind a
semigloss appearance or sheen. It does not leave the finish wet like oil and
Armorall type products do. In addition it renews the appearance and sheen on
dull looking Bakelite such as knobs and escutcheons and again it is dry to the
touch after a day or so. I learned about it from an old-timer at an AWA
conference in Rochester, NY a few years ago and have been impressed with the results
since. It is the best for crackle type finishes I have ever tried. It also
works well for smooth finishes because usually the original paint is semigloss
and polishing with auto wax permanently alters the appearance to glossy and you
might not want to do that. The two best secrets I have ever run across in the
old radio hobby were:
1) GoJo and a roll of paper towels for cleaning up original finishes on
radios with wood cabinets (you might be surprised the original finish can be saved
and at how good it will look after this treatment).
2) OZ Polish for painted finishes and Bakelite
