Hi Mahlon,
    I've done it, but not recently.  IIRC, you just put the xtal in the
coil socket, as you say, and tune to the xtal freq.  If it oscillates,
you'll see a sharp dip as you cross the freq.   If it doesn't osc., then
nothing.  I don't think it gives you any idea of amount of activity,
basically a go/no-go thing.  I guess you could listen to the dipper on a
rcvr & verify the freq., but it might be pulled a little as you tune.
    I realize this isn't a lot of help, but maybe it's some.
