[Boatanchors] A BC-1004 question

Hi,

I have questions, I hope you have answers <grin>.

For some time now I've been working (off and on) on a BC-1004 for
another gentleman. It came to me with all the tubes etc in a box and
rather dirty/dusty. For some reason I've NOT been able to build up any
enthusiasm for working on this set. I'm not sure if it's the separate
power supply intimidating me or what. Usually I complete a BA in a week
or so of steady work. But anyway, I digress.

I've got it all recapped under the chassis, checked the resistors for
tolerance etc. I thought I'd pull the Bandswitch cover and "clean" it
with some DeOxit. I removed about a gazillion screws, only to discover
that I also apparently have to pull the covers over the tuning
capacitors to get in there. When I pulled one of those covers the first
day, a spring loaded bracket snapped down into the area between the
panel and chassis. I FINALLY got it fished out and remounted, without
uttering any profanities, (which I don't use anyway) even though I
wanted to.

Questions: The BAMA manual doesn't seem to show any "procedures" or
details to answer the following.
1. IF I pull the covers from the bandswitch and tuning capacitors, am I
biting off more than I really want to chew? Any good tips on this
section?

2. Are there any "evil" capacitors lurking in either the IF cans or
coil deck?

3. During an under chassis examination I noticed a short length of fine
"twisted" enamel wire coming out between Coils L6 and L7, apparently
part of coil L6. I don't see it in the BAMA manual (no good details).
Is this a "concern" or was it perhaps a test point or something? It
doesn't connect to anything visible from the bottom of the chassis and
doesn't appear to have ever been soldered to anything.

4. Finally, I should really remove the front panel and clean/lube the
control shafts, dials etc. Are there any "Gotcha's" here?

These are the "final" steps prior to testing all the tubes and "smoke
testing" the receiver. I would REALLY like to get this beast out of my
hair before the end of the year if possible.
