I was a fellow member of a ham club in California with an old man who told
this story. When WW-II started up he wanted to join the Navy. They gave
him the standard physical and he flunked the color blindness test. But
the person in charge found out he was a good radio operator and those were
much needed, so marked him as passing. The next time he had to take
the test was on Treasure Island, and it happened that his brother-in-law
was administering the test, so he got past that one. And the third time
he took the test they were looking for color-blind people to fly recon
missions and see through camouflage.
