Hi folks,
Today I pulled my Philco 3" Service Scope out of mothballs.
It has lain up since about 1980. As I usually do, I checked
one of the sections of the electrolytic filter can.
Incredible! It reformed as if it was new stock! I re-hooked
the circuits to it and drug out my Variac and applied low
voltage to the scope looking and listening. All quiet. Had
to work the off-on switch several times to get it to turn
on. I brought the voltage up to 90 and lo and behold, the
scope tube began to show a trace. Although it would not
focus. This is a simple problem. Check the two fixed
resistors, one on each side of the focus potentiometer.
The electrolytic can is Aerovox and it appears almost
all other condensers in the unit are Aerovox! This should
say something for Aerovox condensers. (If they are still
available and are of the same quality).
