Get a Hakko or Goot desoldering gun and you will wonder how you ever got 
along without it. They have a trigger actuated continuous vacuum source and 
adjustable heat level and are no larger than a small Weller soldering gun. The 
solder that is sucked out is stored in a chamber that you empty out occasionally. 
They really do an efficient job of quickly sucking the solder away which then 
makes it easy to untie leads from lugs without burning everything up. The 
one-shot pumps also work after a fashion but they are really meant for the small 
amounts of solder used on PC boards. They really don't fare well with the volume 
of solder that lugs usually have in point to point wiring. You usually have 
to apply heat for an extended period of time while you fumble with triggering 
and recocking the pump several times.
