Duane,

I don't know what was used then, but today you can get an adapter that 
is an SO-239 to Motorola plug (used on car radio antennas) at Radio 
Shack.  The Motorola plug is a nice fit to the RCA jack!

I have used them on my Drake and Collins rigs.
