Im no expert on transformers but I bet they used a high mass potting
material  to reduce transformer 'chatter',  besides the obvious insulation
value of it.

BTW Brian, how did you get the old potting out?


***** Keith and the list.Very simple really,I used an electric heat gun and
got the whole shebang hot enough to allow the core and windings to slowly
slide out.Removed the laminations while the core was still warm and dropped
them into a petrol bath for a week which dissolves the pitch.
