Never owned a Davco, but have owned a Squires Sanders SS-1R receiver with
matching speaker, SS1S Noise Silencer, and SS-1V Video Bandscanner for a
number of years. Great ham band receiver. Has no front-end RF amplifier
so background noise is very low until you come upon a signal. Drum
frequency dial is smooth and slow, so to get from one end of the band to
the other without cranking your wrist off, it's also motorized. The
receiver is designed for AM, SSB, and CW listening. Side-by-side
comparison between the SS-1R and Icom 756PRO II showed little difference
in the ability to receive weak or marginal signals or weak or marginal
signals with interference, where as the R-390A, SX-88, NC-303, and
HQ-170A fell short in similar comparisons.
