The brand name Motorola came from, as I have been
told, from the fact that they started their business
building radios for "motor cars". I have no idea as
to just why they came up with the exact "Motorola",
but back in the 1920s there were a number of radio
manufacturers who use the "ola" on the end of the
brand name (Detrola, Radiola, etc.).

Like many companies, the brand name became much better
known than the actual company name. Therefore, they
adopted the brand name as the official company name.
This is done all the time today.

But why was it changed to Motorola in the first place?
