Nowadays some of the recordings you hear from Telco central office
recordings are done by people who work in those offices.  They find a
voice they like to hear and then actuate the procedure.  Certainly not
Jane Barbe quality.  Some of the recordings sound like they came from
1900 era phonographs they are so scratchy.  As to the varying volume,
there are a lot of variables in so much as the direction you went to get
to that recording.  Until everything gets to the digital stage, with the
extremely reduced manpower issue there is more work than can be handled
by the limited number of bodies.

Bob Hope, the last of the greats!  There is no replacement for this
item.....  He was the greatest of all boatanchor memorandum.  May all
your boatanchor receivers be tuned to his portion of the spectrum.  How
he will be missed!
