He was with the James Gang before that. And I think you're right, but not just
in this case: ePay prices seldom reflect or are relevant to the quality of
anything as much as they are the desire of the bidder to either have the item,
to win, or both. Two of the more difficult to find Hallicrafters receivers I
have came from there, and in both cases I paid "higher than flea market" prices,
even beat Mr Dachis for one in a last minute snipe. I really don't think I have
more money than him, likely just wanted it worse. More over, the prices were in
my view quite fair for the condition and availability of the rigs.
It's still more fun to find the stuff yourself and not just shop online. I've
purchased a few 75A-4s over the years for anywhere from $50 to $500 for a late
model with all the filters and vernier tuning last summer. They go on ePay for
$1000-$1500 average. Not worth it to me, but if you want one now (and many seem
to), that's the place to go. Convenience has its price, though. More fun to find
them yourself, it's a good chance to meet some interesting people. The A-4 I
picked up last summer belonged to someone who worked on the Manhattan Project.
Interesting fellow....
One thing that money and convenience won't buy you, and that's experience. I
always get a kick outta the looks from the 'collectors' and others when we
discuss where we got our gear. ePay is one avenue, but it's surely not the ONLY
route. And it's a toll road at that!
