I too, recently acquired a Mohawk. After cleaning and aligning it, I found it to be a pretty marginal receiver. As designed by Heath, it has ineffective AVC, a poor product detector, restricted audio, and lots of drift, to name a few problems.

Fortunately, there are several mods described by Tom Bonomo, K6AD, in a three-part article in Electric Radio, "New Hope for Your Heathkit Mohawk".

You can do some or all of these mods. You can make a marked improvement in the AVC and product detector with just a few wiring and component changes. Or, you can go 'all the way' and add some new FET-based circuitry.

Makes you wonder why Heath didn't come up with them, they're so simple.

I did just the wiring and component changes, and now the receiver is pretty good. (a 75A-4 it'll never be, though)!
