The 1949 edition of "Hints and Kinks" on p 45 and 46, has a "simple audio
volume compressor", consisting of a 6H6, 6AC7 and a 6AB7.

Also the ARRL Handbook, 1942 has a more simple circuit on p 97, 98, under
the subtitle "Output Limiting".  The circuit shown though, is called  an
"automatic gain control" using a 6H6 only, coupled to the first speech amp
in a modulator.
