[Boatanchors] A military headset question

Hi.
I have a set of what is obviously Military Surplus Headphones, number on the
earpieces is CCN49505-A and on the metal headband CCN-49504 and I was told
this comprises the headset model NAVY CW-49507-B.

Question is this.  On each side, an inch or so to the front (rear?) of the
earpiece is a metal snap.  I've shown them to a couple friends and the
consensus is that these snaps 'may' be to mount in a helmet or possibly to
hold a throat mic.

Anybody know for sure what the snaps are for?
