Barry (and all)
Not a criticism, just an observation.
It is nearly impossible to do a side by side comparison using the Collins
R-390a, or any one of the sub-contracted set models. It is so vastly superior in
so many areas, that almost all sets pale beside it. This is true even today when
compared against some satellite receivers used by the government and other high
end communications.
The R-390a was designed to do specific taks and do them well, which it did, and
does. However, get it out of its area of specialization and it is no longer a
towering giant.
What was the general concensus for MW reception using the Colins R-390a Vs the
Hammarlund 600 series? Now there would be an interesting review to ponder.

Well, Al, someone else just told you it's a good set!
Something I rarely do is side-by-side comparisons. However, about a year
ago, I ran an excellent condition, all Collins R-390 against the SX-73 for
several evenings.
While the SX-73 came up slightly shy as far as signal strength was concerned
under most conditions, it was not a dramatic difference.
Of course, the R-390 was the clear winner on "knowing where you were"!
The SX-73 does sound better. Excepting when I have a small amp driven by
the diode-out on the '390.
I'm surprised that there isn't an SX-73 fan club. Good sensitivity,
silky-smooth tuning, and the band-change knob will keep your wrist strong.
