I once ran into troubles with instability in a Ranger something like what you
describe. I think it was quite bad when spotting but not as bad when
transmitting at full power. I believe it came down to a bad ground on the keyer
subchassis that is mounted above the main chassis to the left of the VFO. It
didn't matter how tight I got the hardware - you could see the keying output
voltage jump around on its own and it seemed to jerk the VFO as well. At times I
also had ac modulation on the VFO signal - it was due to the keyer filament
return having the same poor ground path and it was getting on the keying voltage
and thus into the other stages.
I finally had to run an additional ground wire down thru the existing harness
to ensure the common ground point of the subchassis down to the nearest
ground under the main chassis.
