Hi,

There is an article in the CQ published "SURPLUS CONVERSION MANUAL" on page 
148 entitled "BC-453 With Dual Conversion."  It uses a circuit with a 6AC7 and 
a 6J5 along with 3300KHz and 6800KHz rocks.  Sounds like what you are talking 
about bit there is no mention of a broadcast tuning cap. Basically what you 
have is a simple converter fed directly into the BC-453 which provides the 
second conversion and audio output. 

 I used something similar as a novice using an S-76 for the front end.  
Worked quite well as I remember.

Hope this helps.  If not, I will search further.  If this was in QST, it was 
probably in a "HINTS and KINKS" article.
