[Boatanchors] B&W 5100 xmtr

I know that the B&W 5100 manual says 17 mA for the
grid drive of the pair of 6146 tubes. However, is
this the "true" reading or what the meter reads?

If it is a "true" reading, the 6146 grids are being
very overdriven. The maximum grid current for a
single 6146 is 3 mA (6 mA for a pair) and they will
last much longer at 2.5 mA each (5 mA per pair). The
3 mA is per RCA specifications. Running a pair of
6146 tubes at 17 mA grid drive will reduce the life by
up to a factor of 10!

I am wondering if the fact that the maximum
calibration in the "grid" position is 40 that the 17
reading is relative (even though the manual says 40
mA).

You want to see 17 mils of grid drive and load the
plate to a max of 220 mills, per the manual. I think
that's all we need to know.
