Hi Paul,
congratulation on your purchase. I have a SOKA 747 which is a FTDX-500
sold in Europe under the Sommerkamp name. I got it used in 1974. The
final has two 6KD6 which are very scarce now and not cheap. It is a
powerful rig.
All the units of the family FTDX-500, FTDX-505, FTDX-560, FTDX-570, SOKA
747 are allmost identical. The same applies to the separate units
FRDX-400, FRDX-500 and FLDX-400, FLDX500 which surface on eBay from time
to time. I bought a FTDX-500 on eBay recently as well as a
FRDX-500/FLDX-500 pair. I also found an external speaker, an external
VFO and a 6m transverter. These units are true boatanchors. Keep your
eyes open for the FL-2000 amplifier if you want to complete the setup.
It uses four 6KD6 in parallel.
Repairs are no big deal, standard boatanchor procedure. The manual has
the usual voltage and resistance charts which are a good point to start
troubleshooting. Tubes are common and all are available from AES in
Tempe, AZ and others, even the 6KD6 and the 7360 used in the balance modulator.
The KOKUSAI mechanical filter used in the FRDX/FLDX units are known to
deteriorate badly. There is a website by Takahiro Kato JH1WBU/JA9TTT,
Saitama Japan regarding this problem.
http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~t-kato/hamf/myexp/MF-Repair.html
The website is in Japanese but an automatic translation is availble. It
is good enough to understand what Takahiro wants to say.
Have fun.
