I think it was Scientific American that had a recipe on how to make a Field Effect 
Transistor in you kitchen using stuff found there. Things like aluminum foil and cream 
oftartar powder were two of the ingredients as I remember. The resulting device had a 
gm of about 50k and upper freq of 50 kHz.
