Back in engineering school approaching 40 years ago, the discussion was
that indeed L came about because of flux linkages. Since L=N*(change in
flux with respect to current) and N*flux is flux linkages, hence L or
simply Linkages, where N = number of turns.
The theory that was the strongest second was that Lenz's law (induced
voltage = -L*(di/dt) or -L times the differential of current with
respect to time or the rate of change of current) may have been
involved. Somebody wanted to honor Mr. Lenz. Nobody bought this one!
