Well, Phil, and gang, it may sound silly in retrospect (and I seem to
remember doing the same thing, but not on a kit.)  I think we were just
ahead of our time.

A couple of years ago, I tried to repair a radar detector with an
intermittent connection between the display and the board. One connection
tab had lifted.  Tried to fix it with soldering iron and regular
"meltable" solder.  Forget it.  I learned the hard way that a lot of
modern teeny-tiny surface mount stuff is "glued" together with New Age
conductive "liquid solder." At least, I think that's what it is.

Needless to say, I wound up with a boat anchor for a very small boat.  

Also, it helps to have a two million dollar programmable robot arm to
position the parts.
