Steve, that is a very important part of the receiver, don't ya know!! 
Those people bent over their mirrors are trying to get VHF and UHF 
(Maybe even the cm freqs as well ;-). The mirror thickness acts as a 
very effective tuning capacitor for them to get "tuned up"  at those 
high freqs. When one combines that capacitance with the natural tuned 
cavity of their sinuses, the whole front end works fine, if a little 
fast in the tuning. The detector, however, shuts down, or operates 
extremely erratically,  and so far, for some reason, these experimenters 
don't seem to care.  --hi--
