I have been collecting antique / vintage radios for
well over 30 years (have over 100 restored sets in my
collection). The late WA5KKJ, who lived about 60
miles north of me in a more rural area, used to find
radios to add to my collection. On evening, he, and a
very elderly friend, stopped by my house. I had just
finished restoring an Atwater-Kent Model 44 (1927 AC
TRF receiver) and it was still connected to a
"long-wire" antenna that I used for checking out the
old BC sets.
The friend made a comment like "old radios should be
able to receive old radio programs".
I turned on the AK-44 and through the speaker came a
program from the late 1920s! Both men wanted to see
my Part 15 BC band transmitter and tape recorder. It
took me a couple of minutes to convince them that I
did not have anything that was rebroadcasting a
recording of a program from the 1920s. We just stood
there, listening to the program, wondering just where
in the "Twilight Zone" that we were now located.
Then, the station identified. It seems that a local
Dallas, Texas, station had started rebroadcasting old
radio shows at the same time every evening. At least
we knew that we hadn't slipped off into a time-warp!
Everyone had a good laugh, but we were still surprised
at the timing and the fact that I had been listening
to the only station in the area that was
rebroadcasting the old programs.
If you want to see some photos of a few radios in my
collection, go to the K9STH website at

You can imagine the grin on my face to copy BC
stations loud and clear on a radio built back in the
1920s!
