Ken -
My RC-30 lists the 5963 as "similar" as a sub for a 12AU7. Description for 12AU7 is "phase
inverter or push-pull amplifier in AC/DC radio equipment" while 5963 is "used for 'on-off'
control applications involving long periods of operation under cutoff conditions." Max
plate voltage for the 12AU7 is 330 volts; for the 5963 it's 250. Example application listed
for the 5963 is "Frequency Divider in Computer Service." Pinout is the same.
The substitution chart lists the direct industrial replacement for a 12AU7 as a 6189.
