I was working some ten meter AM with the Apache this evening when the lights dimmed, the bench shook, a light-show played across the back wall, and the breaker tripped. Ah-ha ! Its a clinnnnn-kerrrrr! I had that cover open in 8.2 seconds...
Looks like the filament of the rear one of the two 5R4s in the HV power supply opened, the other one struggled and groaned and lit up like my face after a day in the Idaho wind. Then its filament opened too when I pulled the tubes out of the socket.
Two NOS 5R4's from my tube stash brought the transmitter back to life. Needless to say, the other guy in the QSO was long gone by then.
That's real radio, man... real radio.
