[Boatanchors] Plastic toothed belts - storage

Boy oh boy oh boy....this thread makes me a little nervous. I'm just
thinking back to my teenage days when I learned that certain lubricants will
attack certain types of rubber - the one that comes to mind is how Vaseline
destroys latex, and please DON'T ask how I know. Also, kids use to put
various petroleum products on the tire sidewalls of their hot rods to make
them look shiny and new...only to have them start to dry out and
"weather-check" within a few months.

I don't have the answer, and I don't want to be a Cassandra, but I WOULD
suggest that we consult someone in the synthetic rubber business or at least
a chemist before applying anything to these belts, being as rare as they
are. We don't want to do more harm than good.

73,
Lucky Tom
