Which is VERY hard on the human kidney if inhaled in
large enough quantity! Firemen used to not like
fighting fires in old TV shops because the burning of
selenium rectifiers wiped out a few of them before the
word got around. After that, a fireman didn't enter a
burning TV shop (or other place where selenium
rectifiers could be found in quantity) without an air
pack. Learned this in high school when I was part of
a Boy Scout / Explorer "rescue" unit that the local
fire department put together. We never fought any
fires, but did some "search and rescue" for missing
children, etc.

that awful smell when a selenium rectifier goes up in
smoke is selenium sulfide. Besides stinking to high
heaven, it is a poisonous gas.
