[Boatanchors] selenium rectifier

Depends on the circuit whether or not you have to add
a series resistor to drop the voltage. A silicon
diode has about a .7 volt drop and the selenium range
from a volt or two at low voltage to 25 volts, or so,
on higher voltages. Some circuits can take the
slightly higher voltage without any problems and a
very few really like the voltage to be a bit lower.

I would measure the output voltage before and after
replacing the selenium with a silicon. If it is
significantly higher and the circuit is being
overloaded, then I would put a small resistance
(fairly high wattage) resistor in series with the
rectifier.

Is there a higher voltage drop across the selenium
rectifier? I would think so, but is it significant
enough to worry about?
