[Boatanchors] 75A-3 question

Last year at Dayton I picked up a clean un-modified-looking 75A-3.  Upon closer examination, I found a 6SN7 installed where the optional NBFM adapter usually goes.  Without doing a lot of digging, does anyone out there have a guess as to what the idea was/is?
