I looked up the article. It uses a Command receiver with a Q multiplier and
a couple of other mods to the receiver and has a home brew phasing
transmitter. What do you need?
Years ago, I used a BC-946B BCB command receiver as the IF strip for a
Morrow converter. I added agc, a TNS noise limiter, audio gain, etc. and
it worked great. Of course now I would never modify one.
In the early 60's Western Radio Amateur, a local magazine no longer in
existence published a book about the size of an issue of QST called "A
Forty Meter SSB Transceiver Built from the BC-453B Receiver". It was an
ambitious project where the BC-453 provided most of the rig. I built it
for 75 meters, and got the receiver running, but not the transmitter. A
later issue of Western Radio Amateur said it did not transmit and receive
on the exact same frequency, and I didn't continue. Found the rig in the
garage a couple of days ago when looking for something else.
Designers were Ed Marriner, w6blz and Ernie Mason, w6iqy. Wonder if they
are still around.....
