Hey folks -
This is just a quick reminder about the Military Radio shindig coming
up on Saturday August 10th at Fort Stevens, Oregon. This is in
conjunction with the Oregon Military Vehicle Collectors Club campout at
Ft. Stevens, which runs from August 8th to the 11th. The OMVCC salmon
BBQ is on Saturday the 10th, late in the afternoon.
This is a big annual show for OMVCC, so expect to see a lot of their
military vehicles on display. (OMVCC charges non-members for the salmon
BBQ, but it's free if you're a member - support OMVCC and buy a one
year membership for $10.)
Plan to bring your own radios & vehicles, the larger they are the
better we like it. HF AM gear certainly, HF SSB sure, HF RTTY of
course, 51 MCs tactical FM by all means, field 'phones & switchboards
fersure, tactical satcomm why not, troposcatter yeah sure you
betcha... The Fort has lots of grassy area to set up radios & antennae
& telephone gear.
Currently, plans are to have at least two military radioteletype
stations set up & operating onsite - I'll have a PRC-47 & MITE setup
running on a BB-451 battery plus a TRC-75 & Kleinschmidt TT-4 & TT-76
running from a 3KW genset, and I hope to see at least two other military
RTTY stations there. Most of the folks who regularly check into
clatternet will be at Ft. Stevens, so we'll still do the regular
Saturday morning 850 shift RTTY net on 10137 (850 shift military tones
on USB) from the Fort.
I have a couple of pieces of Don Royer WA6PIR's RTTY art and will send
'em both on 10137 later in the day - both the lovely Rytta & the
gracious Baudette will put in appearances on Saturday afternoon...
Also, listen for the 1/4 Watt N7EPI 850 shift RTTY beacon on 10130 -
it'll be up and running for the entire weekend.
Fort Stevens is right at the mouth of the Columbia River. Currently
an Oregon State Park, it provided for coastal defense from Civil War
times up to WWII. Lots of concrete work remains from those times, and
some artillery is also in evidence. Work progresses on the restoration
of one of the WWII vintage 'disappearing carriage' guns.
The Oregon MVCC guys put on a good show & a fine salmon BBQ at this
event. Last year's event was a booming success with a lot of military
radioactivity, and I'm sure this year will see an even larger event and
lots more attendees.
Fort Stevens is right at the mouth of the Columbia River, near
Astoria, OR. Campsites are available nearby, and you can camp right on
Fort Stevens grounds if you are in uniform and in military tents.
Plenty of eateries and diversions in nearby Astoria & Seaside too.

Hope to see you there.
