Illinois Bronze Paint Company used to have some
various colors of wrinkle paint in spray cans that
went on in two coats, about 5 minutes apart that
worked every time (at least for me). You could
"control" the degree of wrinkle somewhat by heating in
an electric oven to a temperature between 130 and 180
degrees (different temperatures would produce slightly
different wrinkle patterns). I used this on numerous
restorations of vintage radios like the Atwater-Kent
metal cased sets from the 1920s. They even had quite
a number of different colors available that matched
some of the originals used by Atwater-Kent.
Unfortunately, these are no longer available. I have
"heard" that a lot of this is due to EPA regulations
because certain chemicals used in the paints are not
"environmentally friendly".
Those wrinkly paints that are available from auto
parts stores, etc., have been, in my experience, not
reliable. I have painted several very small items at
the same time and some will come out perfect, some
won't crinkle at all, and others are "splotchy".
Thus, I no longer use them.
What I now use that will produce a medium to heavy
crinkle (but won't reliably do a very light crinkle)
is a product by Rust-Oleum called American Accents'
Stone Creations. This is available only in three or
four colors so you definitely have to paint over it to
achieve the desired color. It takes a little
practice, but getting a pretty even crackle finish is
possible. You have to spray in very short "bursts"
holding the can about 12 inches from the surface.
This is what I use for repainting of cabinets that my
clients send in to be done. Of course I point out to
them that the crinkle will be a little deeper than
that which was original in some cases.
I definitely wish that I could get the wrinkle paints
from the 1970s and 1980s that I used to buy "over the
counter" from Sherwin-Williams Paint Stores (Illinois
Bronze primarily). But, since it is no longer
available, I make do with what is available.
