The real thing that sets the GZ34 apart from the 5U4, 5R4, etc. is the fact 
that it has a separate heater and cathode as opposed to a filament. This 
causes it to heat up slower than the directly heated rectifiers. The 5V4 
and 5Z4 are also constructed this way. Replace it with a directly heated 
rectifier carefully. Many times the slow heating was selected by design to 
protect other components.The GZ34 was a popular rectifier in high fidelity 
equipment and was selected so that bias would be present and all of the 
tubes would be up to temperature before B+ was applied.
