Carl -

Be careful working around that mouse nest mess.  I'm far from an expert on 
such things but I understand there is a viral disease (Hantavirus) that you 
can catch if particles get in the air and you breathe them in.  It is a 
problem that phone technicians run into when they open an outdoor wiring box 
and find the mouse stuff.

If you wear a dust-mask and wet-down the mess with water to keep it from 
flying around, (water with a small amount of bleach in it would be good - no 
more than a couple tablespoons per gallon concentration), you should help 
avoid any problems.

You can probably find out more with an internet search for "Hantavirus".  I 
see some good info at the CDC website
