There's an archive somewhere that covers all this, but here's the synopsis:
For MOST applications, there is little difference in any of the full-wave
rectifiers: 5AR4, 5AS4, 5AU4, 5DJ4, 5U4, 5V3, 5V4, 5Y3, 5Y4, 5Z3, 5Z4, etc.
There are minor variations in exact basing, in that some numbers tie to
more pins than others, and larger tubes (5U4) handle more current than
smaller ones (5Y3), but that's about it.
The 5AR4/GZ34 (not substitutes; they are the same tube) is only unusual in
that it's a higher-current tube in a small, 5Y3-sized envelope, which can
limit what will physically fit as a replacement.
So the question becomes not, "what substitutes for the GZ34", since almost
anything might could, but "how, exactly, is it being used?", i.e., current
load, voltage impressed/spiked, available cooling, clearance, etc.
In any case, I have over 100 rectifiers in stock, including the GZ34,
NOSIB. I sell new ones less that A.E.S., and guaranteed used ones for half
- or less, in quantity. e
