Whoaa!  Before you try that, look really closely at that knob.  Does that
knob have press-fit cover -- might be the same plastic/metal as the rest
of it with barely a visible seam?

There is a collet type knob which I've recently come across where you
need to pop off the cap with a very sharp blade -- not much force.  That
exposes a screw which is in line with the shaft.  You back off a turn or
two on the screw to "un-chuck" the knob.  If you pull on one of those
knobs unknowingly, you can do some real damage to what's connected. 
(Don't ask me how I know that ;-)
