Subject: Notice of DP&L Program on Electrical
Safety at 16 Feb. 09 WCOARA Meeting
Date: Wednesday, January 28, 2009, 11:57 PM
DP&L Electrical Safety Presentation and
Demonstration, to be given at the 16 February 2009 WCOARA Meeting
The West Central Ohio Amateur Radio Association
(WCOARA) would like to take this opportunity to
invite area amateur radio operators to attend
their upcoming February meeting. The meeting will
feature a presentation, and demonstration, on the
safe interaction with electrical power, by the
Dayton Power & Light Company. DP&L will present
their electrical safety program, "Think Hot
Stay Safe," at the beginning of the September
WCOARA Meeting. The meeting is scheduled to occur
Monday, 16 February 2009, at 7:00 p.m., in the
Dean Amphitheater of the Charles F. Kettering
Hospital, 3535 Southern Boulevard, Kettering Ohio.
The demonstration equipment takes about an hour
to set up and Rick Vice, who is in charge of
safety for DP&L, has agree to provide several of
his people to make the presentation and conduct
the demonstration. As a part of the
presentation, the electrical safety program
contains impressive demonstrations of the power
of electricity, including clear visual evidence
of the dangers that can be encountered, if
electrical safety considerations are not strictly
followed. This electrical safety program is of
value not only to amateur radio operators,
interested in safely installing radio stations
and antennas, but also to anyone involved, either
directly or indirectly, in emergency responses,
or, alternatively, by those who encounter power
lines, downed by a storm. The program also deals
with how to respond safely, rather than becoming
a victim, when individuals, vehicles or equipment
come in contact with live electrical power sources.
Further directions to the Dean Amphitheater are
as follows. It is located on the lower level of
the hospital, one floor below the reception area
in the center of the building. The building
entrance faces Southern Boulevard, and the
building can be distinguished from others, on the
hospital's campus, by the fact that it has
the emergency Room entrance at its south end.
The meeting room is also easily accessible from
the underground parking garage, which is located
in front of the building. When entering the lower
level through its double doors, the Dean
Amphitheater will be on your immediate left, with
the hospital cafeteria further down the corridor, on your right.
Dayton Power & Light Company's electrical safety
program is an updated version of the program they
have presented, some years in past, at the Dayton
Hamvention. This program represents a training
opportunity that is not generally available to
amateur radio operators, or to the public. It
teaches valuable lessons, which are essential for
safe amateur radio operation, and when
responding, either by radio, or in person, to some
types of emergencies. The program should last
about one hour. Please plan to attend.
In the event the presentation night corresponds
to a weather event, which is sufficiently severe
to force cancellation of the meeting, that will
be announced on the 145.110 MHz repeater,
starting at about 6 p.m. on the meeting
night. This will also be the talk-in frequency.
