[BARC-List] Another HF idea

Having used Kenwoods' Skycommand system, it does all that you say except the automotive sections of your comments.
As to priciness, the model B2000, without the front panel, is competitive with other rigs with the specs you state, at abut $1200-1300, which is comparable to an Icom IC7000. Never mind the price of the 'commander' HT. Skycommand allows for band and frequency change (including RIT), as well as mode. In fact, it works quite well. The radio can be set up for crossband operation with any V/UHF HT, but without the control capability.

Your vision of the typical remote station as being the big rig at home is probably valid. However, your other vision of having the big rig in the car is actually quite the same, with the exception of the power management. Perhaps concentrate on this. Also, look into the increasing numbers of apps (for smart phones and tablets) that can control radios, too, since these handheld computers are already installed on our hips.

73 and good luck! We're all waiting for your next success!

Instead of trying to figure out how to set up an HF station at home,
why not take it to the car!

So, here is my vision -

- Set up a mobile [V/U]HF [160]/80-10(+6/2/440/whatever) station in the car

- Use an HT to control it

- Let some kind of circuitry control the battery current intake of the
HF rig so it "goes to sleep" and can be on in low-power standby 24x7,
thus not drain the car battery

- Use an HT or smartphone via wifi to control the car setup (power on,
change frequency, transmit, etc).

Pretty much a complete role reversal of every remote control page I've
seen where the "base" is at a fixed-station (home) and remote
controlled from the car, etc.

Also a reversal of VHF/UHF being the base station.

I'll be happy to look into my options for a mobile "base" station I
can control from HT and/or smartphone (iphone, for example).

Car would need to be close enough for such local control, but that
would be by design.

I've visited RemoteRig and learned a bit about it. From what I've
read, doesn't seem to accomplish the goal.

Kenwood's SkyCommand looks interesting, but the radio is rather
expensive and can't quite see a TS2000 going into the car.

Maybe a mobile version of the TS2000 with a power-saving option for
24x7 (never power off) could be an option, if one existed!

Insights on how to possibly accomplish this goal are invited and welcome.

Thanks.
