Well .. 

You have the generator.. what's inside?

An external test.  What does the frequency do 
as the throttle is bumped up?  If its just an iron generator
the freq will track the RPM exactly.

Its hard to imagine where that distortion and harmonic content
comes from in a simple  alternator. What was the load?

The real question we should be asking... 
How much RFI does it make?
Can you run / listen to an AM radio while it is running?
Under load?
How about an HF station on Field Day?
