Last month we heard about HF. If you are on HF, or you have an HF
(shortwave) reciever, you may find this post to the Onatario DX Association
interesting.
DE Dan, KA1RDZ
(Tonight, March 11), at 9:20pm EDT, Space Shuttle Mission STS-119 will
launch.
Beginning a couple of hours before the launch time, stay parked on
10780 kHz USB, and you will hear Cape Radio use the freq to tell the Solid
Rocket
Booster recovery vessels (Freedom Star and Liberty Star) which HF freq to
tune to. Often it takes three or four freq attempts until they find one that
is optimum for all parties.
Your best bet for hearing something on 259.7, the Shuttle air-ground UHF
freq, comes a few seconds after the launch if you are near the launch site,
and
a bit later if you are further away. Keep the squelch wide open.
For Satcoms related to the overseas aborted-mission landing sites, search
the 261 MHz NFM area; 261.575 is often used.
