Hi, I have just subscribed to this list. I am trying to figure out of BARC
is the right club for me.

I am the kind of ham who is interested in getting things done,
particularly technical infrastructure. The domain of amateur radio that
gets most of my attention is diital modes, because radio datacomm is my
career and it's also what I've gone back to school for. I know that
packet, around the world, has somewhat withered since the Internet became
popular. I'd like to reverse that. I've convinced the Harvard Wireless
Club, of which I am a member, to recrystal the box of a dozen or so maxon
UHF data radios which I donated. I just need to pick a frequency. I want
to run these at high speeds - 9600 at least, if we can't get 19200.
Because sound cards can't do 19200, I imagine that 9600 will be the
standard, with perhaps a fewer high-speed links. I intend to install a
node at W1AF in Harvard Square, and at my (N1YRK) shack in Malden (near
the Medford line).

I've been involved with community wifi Internet for several years now, and
hope that there can be a cross-over of interest between amateur radio and
others in the community wifi interest groups.

Lately, I have become enamored of software defined radios. I have
particularly found the gnuradio and USRP to be attractive. I'd like to
chat with others about these. We may be getting on at W1AF for use as an
HF rig.

I am also a user of PSK31 and other narrow-band HF modes, and would like
to work on improving the equipment and protocols/modes. I have ideas
regarding sensor network and amateur radio.

Do people find repeater coverage to be good in the city, when you've only
got an HT? I've had some real problems in certain spots. Maybe we can
enumerate and map the 'dead spots' and get some repeaters installed. which
reminds me, I had another idea regarding using PCs as repeater
controllers. Would save some money, for sure!

So, if there are BARC members who find these topics interesting, let me
know, and I'll join.

73,
N1YRK
